Our Curriculum

We aim to provide a curriculum which is broad, balanced and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We want our children to be happy, safe, confident and resilient learners so that they develop the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. We place learning to read at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to become fluent and confident readers so that they can then read to learn.

Our curriculum aims to help pupils to know about and be proud of the local area as well as understand their role as part of the wider world. As a Rights Respecting School, developing children’s sense of responsibility as future global citizens, is a key part of our curriculum.

Subject leaders have identified what children need to know, remember and be able to do by the time they leave Byron within each curriculum subject. Subject leaders have then broken this down into smaller steps and planned the best order in which to teach it so that pupils build their knowledge from Reception to Year 6 to achieve these end goals. Where some subjects are taught in mixed age classes, subject leaders have thought carefully about how the knowledge is introduced and revisited each year and how older children are given the opportunity to apply this knowledge within different contexts. The curriculum planning for some subjects has therefore been split into Year A and Year B planning.

To find out more about each curriculum subject please see the subject pages under the curriculum tab. The information on these pages: shares our aims for each curriculum subject, shows what is taught and when for each year group, and outlines what children should know and be able to do during their time at Byron.

We want our children to receive great teaching in every lesson so that the planned curriculum is taught in the best way to help children to know more, remember more and be able to do more by the time they leave Byron.  Please click here for a summary of our teaching approach.

If you require any further information about our curriculum, please don't hesitate to speak to your child's class teacher or contact the school office.
